Japan Supports Education and Access to Safe Water in West Nile Region
The Embassy of Japan is to hand over two projects in West Nile region of 192,615 USD: one for construction of dormitory blocks at Logiri Girls Senior Secondary School in Arua (97,070 USD) today, and the other for improvement of access to safe water in 17 schools in Koboko District (95,545 USD) on 5 September.
H.E. Kazuo Minagawa, the Ambassador of Japan to Uganda, will officiate the commissioning of these projects.
Logiri Girls Senior Secondary School is a government aided school providing full board education for more than 710 girls. Its dormitory facility, however, meant to accommodate some 360 girls, is accommodating 610 girls. The new dormitory blocks constructed, together with double decker beds procured by the project will enable the school to accommodate all the girls and thus reducing overcrowding and preventing infectious diseases, fire and any other accidents which may occur due to overcrowding.
In Koboko, 17 boreholes have been drilled for 15 primary and 2 secondary schools which will benefit over 11,510 pupils and 40,000 community members in the district.
The donation by Japan is part of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), a scheme administered by the Japanese Embassy to support community development projects to uplift the life of grassroots people. So far, a total of 158 projects have been funded under the scheme since its initiation in Uganda in 1992.
Japan, steadily promoting ownership of and partnership with African countries through Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) process, is committed to boosting economic growth, achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and consolidating peace and good governance in Africa.

The hand-over ceremony for Arua will take place at Logiri Girls Secondary School starting at 2:00 pm, on 4 September while in Koboko, the ceremony will take place at Koboko Modern Secondary School starting at 10:00 am, on 5 September.
